The 2006-2007 team at Nationals
Attention alumni: Please update us on where you’re at and what you’re up to
2007-2008
Despite the departure of two of our advisors, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace, our team started the 2007 and 2008 robotics season with full force. We began our charity work reading to children at Barnes and Noble with our “Robot Read Alouds.” Continuing with including children the robotics program, more than half of our members mentored Lego League teams throughout the community and we included even more teams in the Lego Tournament. We also went to middle schools throughout the community and exposed them to what robotics is all about. Unfortunately, many of our fellow FIRST teams were negatively impacted by the October California wildfires. Eager to help, our team set up a fund raiser so that the affected teams could be helped by fellow FIRST teams throughout the country. Our team also adopted a retired F-105 Thunderchief airplane. We gathered as a team to watch the kickoff event, and were thrilled with the challenge the new game, Overdrive, would provide us. We are excited to build our robot, “The Phantom” and to participate in upcoming San Diego and LA competitions.
2006-2007
We had been working well before the six week build season though to help promote science and technology to the community. Our team went to different middle schools and helped train them in preparation for the LEGO competition we held. We also participated in many other community activities to help promote our program such as Salute to Youth, The Air Show at Edwards Air Force Base, and summer VEX workshops for middle school kids. This year our team invited elementary school kids to help us in naming our robot. A 5th grader, Shane, won the competition and named the robot “Buster 399.” Our most exciting achievement was by far winning the prestigious Chairman’s Award at out L.A. competition. After becoming a finalist at the Philadelphia Competition we took our team to the Georgia Nationals. All in all the year was an incredibly successful one.
2005-2006
The 2005-2006 year started with the tragic loss of team member Tyler Duggins in a car accident on the way to school. The team lovingly named the robot “TnT” in honor of Tyler and his father Thomas, who were both valuable members of Eagle Robotics before their untimely passing. “TnT” proved successful in Annapolis, MD and Eagle Robotics brought home the Team Spirit Award for their loud cheers and gregarious spirit. The team’s dedication and hard work paid off even further, as the team won the prestigious Engineering Inspiration award at the Las Vegas Regional. That immediately qualified the team to attend the FIRST FRC Championship in Atlanta, at which the robot and team performed nobly.
2004-2005
This year we continued the amazing growth of the pervious year with an incredible sponsorship from HR Textron. the team of 26 members put together a robot name "Mr. Clean," after Nick Hayes, a member of our team who suffered through Chemo-Therapy. Mr. Clean placed first at the SCRRF Chatsworth scrimmage competition. The team was able to compete in both the NASA sponsored Las Vegas Regional Competition, and the Atlanta, Georgia National Competition. our team was also made stronger by the mentorship of the late Thomas Duggins. He helped us to weld, laugh, and grow and the team will forever mourn his loss.
2003-2004
The community awareness and sponsorship grew this year. There were more mentors this year than any other, people such as Dick Chambers, Principle Engineer at Northrop, Harold Howell, Operations Engineers at NASA, Precision Machine and Engineering, EdoTechnical Services Operations, and many former robotics members and parents.
The team and the robot, "Gobstopper", competed at the Los Angeles Regional competition and placed 5th. the team also competed at the National competition held in Atlanta, Georgia where the robot placed 12th out of 73 teams in one out of four divisions. It was a great and wonderful accomplishment to rank the 3rd highest point, at 270, as well.
2002- 2003
The members of the 4th Robotics team said good-bye to Mr. Bowen, who resigned, and the team began anew with Mr. Speolstra as lead advisor. The mentors this year included: Mr. Chambers, Mr. Matuszeki, Mr. Cornell, Mr. Colon, Mr. Craft, Mrs. Lowe, Ms. Berumen, Ms. Cooney, and Mrs. Henry.
Since the "Oompa Loompa" robot did so well the previous year, the team decided to keep the Willy Wonka theme. The team named this year's robot "Oompa Loompa II." "Oompa Loompa II" placed 5th at the Regional Competition in Lost Angeles, CA, and placed 12th in their division at Nationals in Houston, TX.
2001-2002
Mr. Ty Mettler left the Robotics team this year, and Mr. Bowen became lead advisor and welcomed assistant advisor Mr. Spoelstra. Vice Principal Stacy Bryant created a Marketing team that incorporated management skills and the additions were lead by Rose Berumen. The mentors this year included: Mrs. Lowe, Mr. Chambers, Mr. Matuszeski, Mr. Cornell, Mr. Colon, Mrs. Henry, Mr. Jennings, and Mr. Craft.
The robot this year was named "Oompa Loompa." the robot took 2nd place in the Los Angeles, CA Regional Competition and the team placed 20th place in their division at Nationals in Orlando Fl.
2000-2001
Returning as lead advisor, Mr. Ty Mettler added an assistant advisor, Mr. Mick Bowen. Team mentors included: Mr. Adam Matuszeki, Mr. Parker, Mrs. Thunderling, Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Lowe, and Mr. and Mrs. Dude.
The robot was named "Cledus" the second year. The team finished 23rd out of 47 teams at the Los Angeles, CA Regional Competition and placed 42nd out of 100 teams at National Competition in Orlando, Fl.
1999-2000
Lancaster Robotics Team 399 began in 1999. initially, Dr. Marianne McCarthy from NASA Dryden approached Lancaster High in hopes of starting the first Robotics Team in the Antelope Valley. A team was formed with lead advisor Ty Mettler and a group of 24 students. NASA became a major sponsor for the team.
Mentors included: Mr. Parker, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Adam Matuszeski, Mr. Thenderling, Mrs. Henry, Mrs. Farris, and Mrs. Mettler.
Team 399 named their first robot "Pac-Bot." Team members, advisors, and administrators traveled and competed in a Regional Competition in San Jose, CA placing 31st out of 43 teams. at the National Competition in Orlando, FL the team placed 89th out of 268 teams.
